This Automotive Museum Opened an Exhibit Featuring Several Dystopian Vehicles

Petersen Automotive Museum's Hollywood Dream Machines features several cyberpunk and dystopian vehicles.

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles is an interesting place for anyone into automotive history, but this year in particular might be the time to go for fans of cyberpunk and dystopian films as the museum is opening an exhibit called “Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy.”

The vehicles presented run the sci-fi gamut, including those from Back to the Future, Tron: Legacy, Jurrasic Park, and Black Panther. But of note to readers of this blog, the exhibit includes several vehicles from various cyberpunk and dystopian films such as Blade Runner, Minority Report, RoboCop, Ghost in the Shell, Terminator: Salvation, A Clockwork Orange, among others.

Deckard's Sedan from Blade Runner. While still cool, it looks a bit different outside the gritty future-Los Angeles of the film.

Vehicles have always played an important part of world building in films and other visual storytelling. If done well, they add a distinct visceral element that brings the world to life and immerses the viewer into the story.

This is a pretty unique opportunity to see some iconic vehicles from equally iconic films. And some not-so-iconic films that still had some pretty awesome vehicles.

The Skynet Moto-Terminator from Terminator: Salvation.

The Paleofuture article has more images of some of these vehicles, including an up-close look at Deckard’s Blade Runner car and the impressive Moto-Terminator.

So if you happen to be in the Los Angeles area this year, this is a destination you probably don’t want to miss. The exhibit is open from now until March 15, 2020.

If you do catch this exhibit, please comment here and let us know what you thought of it. It is very unlikely I’ll be able to go so I’m curious what you think.
